Farm Tour

Get an up-close and personal look at a working Costa Rica farm in Futuro, just a short drive from Tree Houses Hotel. Rolando will welcome you with a guided tour of his farm where he grows bananas, plantains, pineapples, yucca and a variety of other fruits and vegetables. Get up early, help milk the cows, tour the farm and then sit down to a hearty breakfast or lunch. This eco-friendly farm produces its own gas for cooking and does not use any pesticides.

Times: Daily (except Saturdays) in the morning or in the afternoon.

EcoTEC and Bio-diesel Tour

Designed for the environmentally conscious, the Biotour is an option where you can visit EcoTEC, a project developed in the Technological Institute of Costa Rica (TEC), one of the best public universities in the country, and later the Bio-diesel tour where you can learn how the H&M company makes its own biodiesel. The tour is offered only during the mornings.

EcoTEC “is a unit of attractions regarding different environmental topics going from the protection of biotic sources, the value of local biodiversity and its nontraditional use, up to the scientific research, environmental education and the increase of new academic opportunities at TEC”. This project involves mini-farms of different species such as white-tail deer, crocodiles, caiman and butterflies. Some of these species are in danger of extinction such as the white-tail deer and cocodrylus acutus. In this place, visitors will have the opportunity to see and interact directly with the animals, under strict safety measures. This project also has a 600-meter trail with two kinds of forest: secondary and regeneration. After EcoTEC, there is a 5-minute drive to the H&M facilities, where the company manufactures its own bio-diesel, from used kitchen oil from the hotels and restaurants in La Fotuna, as well as the TEC’s meat-processing factory waste and the oil obtained from a plant named jatropha curcas.

Here all will enjoy a speech about the importance and advantages of biodiesel, but what’s more important, all participants will have the chance to “cook” their own homemade biodiesel. Later on our guides will show the place where each of the steps of the process takes place in the real factory of H&M. Our Biotour closes with a snack in H&M and then back to Tree Houses.
